School advice for waste

„School advice for waste"

Implementer: John Paul II School Group in Rudna

Problem: The John Paul II School Group in Rudna is attended by 600 pupils. They have the option of using the school lunchroom on a daily basis, visiting the school shop or going to one of three large shops located near the school. Indeed, many students do go out during the lunch break to buy extra food. Regrettably, however, pupils could not be expected to learn and take on the habit of separating waste they threw out because neither the school nor the nearby area had any waste recycling containers. Rudna has a landfill, whose staff regularly source separated waste from local inhabitants; however, it was clear from landfill staff that much of the waste was being improperly separated and required additional sorting.

Objective: The main objective of the project was to increase waste separation and recycling in the community by educating children and youth through a mix of outdoor hands-on and indoor learning and creative activities.

Project implementation and results: Project work involved:

1. A weekly nature interdisciplinary track focusing on „waste separation and recycling" (18 lesson hours for 4th form elementary school and 1st form gymnasium in accordance with the track timetable in the School Group);

2. Participation of pupils in „World Clean-Up Day" in 17 different clean-up locations;

3. „School advice for waste" workshops organised for 40 teachers, 10 village councilpersons and 15 after-school youth club staff members;

4. Hosting two collection days specifically for waste-paper, aluminum and spent batteries;

5. Building a compost heap for organic waste;

6. Young scientists conference for pupils from 4 schools in the Rudna, Grębocice and Ścinawa school districts;

7. Outdoor lessons for 300 pupils at various locations, including the landfill site and the Żelazny Most waste treatment facility;

8. Study trip for 50 pupils most involved in project work accompanied by 3 teachers. Study trip agenda included attending paper recycling workshops in Duszniki Zdrój and visiting the Table Mountains National Park;

9. Art contest for approx. 50 pupils from the elementary and gymnasium level; exhibit of competition entries entitled „After school gallery in school halls";

10. A closing ceremony with exhibits, a multimedia presentation, delivered speeches and the presentation of a project summary report.
