My green school

„My green school"

Implementer: Primary School No. 3 in Głuszyca

Problem: Surrounding the school was a large area, which had not been used to its full advantage. The small playground nearby was devoid of ornamental shrubs, while existing rock garden was small and its flora had little in the way of species diversity and thus was not properly suited to be a place to educate children about the environment. The other issue that the school had to face was the absence of green space that could be used by children during school breaks and for recreational purposes.

Objective: The main objective of the project was to develop the area around the school and reorganise the adjoining square for educational, recreational and environmental purposes.

The particular project goals related to:

1. Heightening the awareness and sensitivity to nature's beauty and to sustainable land management.

3. Regularly having lessons outdoors.

4. Supporting greater cooperation and teamwork of and among the school community, including parents.

5. Learning to respect one's work and that of others by getting involved in caring for and managing the school's surroundings.

Project implementation and results: Project work included the following activities:

1. ,,The area around my school" art contest for pupils in forms 0-6, with the most interesting artwork being incorporated into the project.

2. Poetry contest entitled ,,Our school is green" for pupils in forms 4-6, awarding and circulating the most interesting poetical works at school.

3. Planting trees and ornamental shrubs along the fencing so as to create a natural barrier separating the school from the busy street nearby.

4. Modernising the green areas' recreational base to facilitate sports and recreational activities.

5. Planting existing flower beds with shrubs, expanding and improving the rock garden, setting up species identification signs next to trees and shrubs.

6. Competition for designing and building the most interesting bird-feeder organised by members of the school's environmental club. A display of the most interesting entries gave rise to the idea of having a "bird cafeteria".

7. Competition for the design of a "green recreational corner" (pupils in forms 4-6 created models, younger forms used formie plastycznej.

8. Keeping the local community informed about the progress made in the project by means of multimedia presentations, a photo gallery, posted updates on the websites of the Głuszyca Town Hall and Głuszyca Municipality, the school website, press releases and follow-up articles sent to the local press and cable television network.

9. Starting a school tradition of planting tree saplings by pupils from form 1.

10. Festivities marking the end of project work, attended by partnering organisations, parents, teachers and pupils. Presentation of commemorative certificates.
