„How green it is all around"

 

Implementer: Primary School in Czarny Bór.

 

Problem: The school needed a rest and outdoor education area; next to the school there were some grounds that had not been managed or developed in any way.

 

Objective: The main aims of the project were the following:

a)      to clean up and develop the grounds into a green space for recreation and outdoor education,

b)      to promote eco-friendly attitudes, behavior and sensitivity to environmental issues; to instill respect for nature and a sense of responsibility among the pupils and local community for protecting and looking after it,

c)      to develop teamwork skills during the implementation of the project.

 

Project implementation and results: Project work included the following activities:

1.      Promoting the project among pupils and parents (selection of the best project).

2.      Locating and recruiting individuals and organisations to support the project.

3.      Creating information signs relating to safety during excavations by the school arts club.

4.      Carrying out a training session on safety procedures during construction set up and clean up operations (at a school nature club meeting).

5.      Mother's Day picnic-fundraiser in May.

6.      Preparing the selected grounds (cutting metal posts, removing turf, purchasing necessary materials).

7.      Putting in a garden border roll under the trees, laying down landscape fabric, scattering bark chips.

8.      Preparing a circular flower bed.

9.      Setting up benches.

10.  Planting and posting identification signs.

11.  Laying down garden paths.

12.  Official opening celebration of the newly developed green space.

13.    Putting on a school theatrical performance with a pro-environmental message.
