Green and flowery school surroundings
„Green and flowery school surroundings"
Implementer: J. Korczak
Nursery and Primary School in Sokołowsko.
Problem: The area
neighboring the school was in a poor state which affected the quality of the
local natural environment. The area was not managed or looked after in any way
and as such failed in its potential as a resting place, outdoor education site
and an ornamental space.
Objective: The main
objective of the project was to solve the problem highlighted above and make
sure the common spaces around the school were properly looked after. It was
likewise found to be very important to promote along the way attitudes and
approaches which favour the environment among school children as well as among
the local community. Finally, the school wanted to use the project as a
platform to carry out its role of Local Center for Environmental Action.
Project
implementation and results: Project work included the following activities:
1. Talks with
pupils on the topic "How we can take care of the commons" (oral
responses, follow-up writing assignments).
2. Art
competition for the design of a land use plan of the area around the school.
3. Securing
sponsors and partners to assist in carrying out particular project activities.
4. Putting the
most interesting pupil land use project into practice with the help of parents,
teachers and friends of the school:
- planting deciduous and coniferous
shrubs to form a hedge which runs alongside the fence,
- planting approx. 100 bulbous
flowering plants that bloom in the spring (tulipans, jonquils, hyacinths),
- creating 3 rock gardens with
perennial plants,
- setting up 2 benches and 3
rubbish bins,
- sowing grass in an area of 200m2,
- building 10 windowboxes,
- placing ID signs with plant
descriptions.
5. Creating
nature trails to facilitate outdoor education activities.
6. Installing a
rainbarrel for watering plants.
7. Contests for
the best environmental tale and King of the Suche Mountains mascot, among
others; creating a photoalbum showing protected plant species found in the
area.
8. A field trip
taken together with friends from the Czech Republic to the Sudety Wałbrzyskie
Landscape Park involving, among other activities, identification of plant and
animal species with the help of guides.
9. Environmental
session „What do we know about landscape parks in our powiat?" at the
tourist shelter.
10. Nature
Photography competition.

with a forest ranger and a hunter from the "Knieja" hunting club.
12. Sports
