Gaworzyce Municipality is our common home "Green Gaworzyce"
„Gaworzyce
Municipality is our common home „Green Gaworzyce"
Implementer: Public Gymnasium in
Gaworzyce
Problem: Insufficient concern
among local residents about the appearance of their properties, and by
extension the image of the municipality, had contributed to a situation, where
Gaworzyce municipality had not established itself as a tourist destination
despite its many geographical and natural attractions. The Gaworzyce park is a
historical park and is located approx. 500 m from the gymnasium; however, prior to the
project, it was not fit or equipped to act as a rest and recreation area for
the local community, let alone for children and youth. The lack of sufficient
funds and engagement on the part of the local community in the care and upkeep
of the area led to its neglect. To remedy this would require regenerating the
park with new saplings, adding benches and rubbish bins, weeding the lawn and
sowing new grass in places where it was not well established.
Objective: The main goals of the project were
to inspire local community groups to work to improve the quality of the public
spaces in the municipality, to develop and foster pro-environmental attitudes
and finally to develop places where outdoor events and hands-on opportunities
for learning about the environment, biology and ecology can take place, whether
it is Gaworzyce park or other places of natural interest in the municipality.
Project implementation and results: Project
work involved:
1. Organising a joint session of teaching staff meetings from both
schools to outline guidelines for action.
2.
Carrying out a survey among the pupils to guage their awareness of the
environmental problems present in the municipality; conducting an audit of the
quality and appearance of private property holdings in individual towns and
villages. The audit results were used for the „Property" campaign, which
involved inspections and cleanup notices.
3.
Contest for the most beautiful property with participants from 13 towns in the
municipality (approx. 400 properties involved).
4.
Informational posters made by pupils, along with a special issue of the „Gim-Times"
newsletter dedicated to the project and a leaflet/tourist guide distributed
throughout the municipality.
5.
Cleaning up and improving the historical Gaworzyce park (planting new tree
saplings, sowing grass in the areas between the trees, constructing information
signs and setting them out, recreating walking paths).
6.
Organising events in the park including:
a) festivities on
occasion of Children's Day, „Greeting the Summer", community festival in
Dalkowo, „Saying Goodbye to the Summer", „A Children-Friendly Rural
Municipality"
b)
competitions - Regional Review of Song and Dance „Sing with Us",
c) environmental lessons for pupils of the Gaworzyce Primary School and
Gaworzyce Gymansium: „Park as an example of an ecosystem", „Getting to know the
flora of our municipal park", „Tourist attractions in the region", „On the
trail of natural monuments in our town", „Determining and marking the cardinal
directions in the field", „October brass and bronze - seasons and rhythms of
life".
